Business Benefits Of Voip

By: Jonathan L. Acker

VoIP phone service can be very helpful for small businesses today. With VoIP, a company can save significant amounts of money, particularly if they make large numbers of long-distance or international phone calls. In addition, it is possible to benefit from the many features that were previously available only to larger companies.

Traditional phone service sends a constant voice stream over the phone lines. With VoIP, your call is converted into digital packets which are each sent via whichever route on the Internet is most efficient. This makes the transmission substantially less expensive.

It does not matter where in the world the other person is located.

There are a variety of services available that help businesses take advantage of the low cost nature of VoIP. Some of these are focused on free calling (which are generally more targeted at consumers), while others provide inexpensive low cost services. There are also some which are particularly focused on international calling.

In addition to the cost savings, voice over IP service offers small businesses the ability to benefit from some of the features traditionally available only to larger companies. These include:

- Automated voicemail

- Automatic screening of calls

- Ability to record a call

- Logging of inbound/outbound calls

- Automatic answering system

- Music on hold

- Ability to support multiple extensions

- Dial by name directory

Along with the above-listed items, there are several other options that may be available, depending on the VoIP provider you select. For instance, you may be able to get phone numbers in a variety of different area codes, giving the impression of offices located across the nation.

What most of the business features have in common is that they provide small companies with many of the services traditionally available only to the quite large. One example is a voicemail service allowing for extensions, and even a dial-by-name directory. You can have an automated person answering the phone for you!

You might be worried that critical calls will end up in voicemail - but if you want important customers to just be put straight to you, you can do that as well. Define their number in the system, and those important calls will be sent straight through to your desk (or even have them ring your cell phone)!

VoIP phone service is helping large numbers of companies save money while simultaneously enjoying a larger feature set. Other businesses have been using the same phone service for years, and are reluctant to make a change. After considering all the benefits, however, it becomes clear that every business should at least take a look at VoIP.
